Installing Skype on Ubuntu 9.04
Posted by beginlinux on April 28, 2009
Since I have a Skype account and a new install of Ubuntu 9.04 I thought it would make sense to get Skype going.
In order to install Skype, it is not in the repository, you must go to the Skype web site. Quite frankly, I am not sure they give a rip about Linux users as the state of their programs for install is way behind. But you can get it to work.
Download Old Programs
You will need to download the programs that are out of date for Ubuntu.
http://www.skype.com/download/skype/linux/choose/
Right Click on the Package
Open with GDebi package Installer, you will see the option with a right click.
This will open the Package Installer. Just click install.
While it is installing check your audio, headset what ever you are going to use so that you know they work. In the upper right hand corner of the Desktop you will see the audio icon, be sure to test and verify you can hear sound.
The Package Installer will install the necessary 20 programs to get Skype going. You will need access to the root account to install.
Edit Sound Devices. At the least you must edit the sound devices for Skype.
I found Skype a little tricky with my audio on the laptop. I am using a Logitech USB headphone but for some reason the audio initially only came from the laptop speakers. I fixed it with these settings which tested and worked fine.
Do your self a favor a set up a few security settings. If you want to add some security only allow calls from people that you have specifically allowed.

Often voice breaking up is a result of your Internet connection. If you are on a busy or slow connection you will see that result.

aha … first select devices, second click apply button, third click test button (i had the 2nd and 3rd in wrong order before)

although it works, it doesn’t work optimal
when i speak, the other side hears the volume change from medium to strong and then suddenly soft.
Someone knows a way around that?

If it will not make test sound …you need to try different options with your sound. For example if you are using USB headphones, go into Preferences/Sound and make sure USB headphones is selected in the sound options for each of the categories.
beginlinux said
Unfortunately Skype is slow in updating the versions so you have to use an old one, which should work. Check your hardware settings for sound.

Check your sound settings as that is the common problem.

Well, I managed to get skype and I can get even a call but every time I sign in I have to go to TERMINAL and “kill” each time several SKYPE accounts that for some reason pop in whenever I sign in or dial a number. Nobody seems to know what to do with this annoyance.

If you have ubuntu 9.04 and 64 bit and you cannot install skype at all go to http://www.skype.com/go/getskype-linux-ubuntu-amd64

To Install in Ubuntu 9.04 X64 do this:
1) Download the bin from http://www.skype.com/download/skype/linux/choose/ -> Ubuntu 7.04-8.04
2) Install it with dpkg -i –force-architecture skype-debian_2.0.0.72-1_i386.deb
2.1) Look that the skype-debian_2.0.0.72-1_i386.deb is the package that I downloaded from that url….
3) That’s it …

I tried installing Skype after installing Ubuntu 9.04 on my Dell Mini 9 netbook. The microphone did not work. I looked at the other blogs and other people have the same problem. None of the solutions worked. I reformatted the hard drive and reinstalled Ubuntu 9.04 and skype three times trying different settings. I finally gave up and reinstalled the Dell factory Ubuntu DVD.

I had Problem with getting the mic to work in skype beta 2.1.0.47 and i just followed the instruction on this ubuntu help page (https://help.ubuntu.com/community/Skype) for skype and it worked.
I just did this step and skype found my usb mic from my logitech camara. I think the whole issue is the Pulseaudio driver is causing all the issue with it. Maybe you donot even have have Esound installed but i installed anyway after i did that it worked.. Made the test call and had no problems with it.
killall pulseaudio
sudo aptitude remove pulseaudio
sudo aptitude install esound
sudo aptitude remove /etc/X11/Xsession.d/70pulseaudio

Tharindu,
in you Synaptic Package Manager search for libqt4, if you select libqtcore4 or libqtgui4..it should select all the packages that need to be installed.. if not you need to install libat4-dbus
