September 17, 2008 Leave a comment

Compiz is a composite window manager for the X window system that uses 3D graphics hardware to create fast composting desktop effects. The effects of Compiz are implemented as loadable plugins and include great effects like the cube, the wall, minimalization effects and so much more. Compiz version 0.7.8 was released this morning bringing with it a good selection of new features improvements and of course bug fixes. On the plugin side of things, Compiz 0.7.8 features a new plugin called “obs” which handles opacity, brightness and saturation bindings and matches. The unresponsive window greyout and the configuration options for it have been moved to the “fade” plugin. Constant fade time has been added to fade mode for this plugin. Besides plugin improvements Compiz version 0.7.8 also includes an enhanced timer infrastructure to allow synchronization and execution of multiple timer callbacks. Matching for window’s alpha channel has also been added.

The release announcement is here. If you need help installing Compiz check out this Compiz installation tutorial. More about Compiz and the Compiz Homepage.
