Macpup Foxy 3.0 Puppy With Enlightenment Released

November 30, 2009 1 comment

One thing I enjoy about Linux is that is comes in all shapes and sizes. Macpup Foxy 3.0 features the Enlightenment window manager and a Mac OS X-like user interface. Macpup Foxy 3.0 is based on Puppy Linux 4.3.1 which uses the Linux kernel 2.6.30.5. Macpup Foxy 3.0 includes all the applications from Puppy 4.1 and 4.3.1 service pack plus Macpup Foxy 3.0 features Firefox 3.5.4, GIMP 2.6.3, and a few other enhancements. Here’s a short release announcement.

I booted up Macpup Foxy 3.0 in RAM to get a few screenshots and spent only a few minutes playing around. I wasn’t particularly impressed by the desktop feel of the distro out of the box. The brown background with birds didn’t do it for me and my resolution was a bit off. Both of these things were corrected easily though and a window even popped up on startup offering resolution changes which was a nice touch. Another thing worth noting is the application selection in Macpup Foxy 3.0. This is a minimalist distro yet it has a powerhouse of applications to use out of the box.

My Favorite Puppy 4.2 Addition

April 9, 2009 2 comments

As I looked at the recent release of the 100 MB Puppy Linux I realized Puppy 4.2 includes a few feature that are extremely useful for me. Puppy 4.2 comes with two window managers, choose either ICEWM or JWM which is appealing to a wider variety of Linux users. Users may also find appealing, the additional theme options with Clearlooks GTK+2 theme engine, SeaMonkey web browser with MonkeyMenu extension, Puppy control panel, Pwidgets desktop applications, AlsaPlayer and Pmusic for audio entertainment, Streamtuner internet radio, Gxine full-screen video playback, Puppy Web Desktop, extra shutdown options, a new game lineup and more. These are all great changes in my book but one of them brought me some great productive features.

I’ve used SeaMonkey plenty of times and enjoy the entire SeaMonkey internet application suite especially Composer, SeaMonkey’s built in HTML editor. This time around I was pleasantly surprised with the usefulness of the MonkeyMenu extension installed by default.

The MonkeyMenu extension for the SeaMonkey web browser adds a large amount of customization options to SeaMonkey including an additional 29 buttons that can be added, collapsible toolbars, and much more. Just take a look at the collection of MonkeyMenu options you can play with.
