Installing Skype on Ubuntu 9.04
Since I have a Skype account and a new install of Ubuntu 9.04 I thought it would make sense to get Skype going.
In order to install Skype, it is not in the repository, you must go to the Skype web site. Quite frankly, I am not sure they give a rip about Linux users as the state of their programs for install is way behind. But you can get it to work.
Download Old Programs
You will need to download the programs that are out of date for Ubuntu.
http://www.skype.com/download/skype/linux/choose/
Right Click on the Package
Open with GDebi package Installer, you will see the option with a right click.
This will open the Package Installer. Just click install.
While it is installing check your audio, headset what ever you are going to use so that you know they work. In the upper right hand corner of the Desktop you will see the audio icon, be sure to test and verify you can hear sound.
The Package Installer will install the necessary 20 programs to get Skype going. You will need access to the root account to install.
Edit Sound Devices. At the least you must edit the sound devices for Skype.
I found Skype a little tricky with my audio on the laptop. I am using a Logitech USB headphone but for some reason the audio initially only came from the laptop speakers. I fixed it with these settings which tested and worked fine.
Do your self a favor a set up a few security settings. If you want to add some security only allow calls from people that you have specifically allowed.
We sell 150 Ubuntu training videos on CD!
This works for 32 bit computers. What about 64 bit computers.
I have to add few more lines to kevin response. It works only with one sound card. If addon card installed incase ur onboard sound card problem. The Mike wont work.

Often voice breaking up is a result of your Internet connection. If you are on a busy or slow connection you will see that result.
Can anybody help me? I did what’s being suggested nut when I’m trying to create an account with SKYPE I can’t sign up I’m getting only options to reset or close, the middle button sign up is not active.

i have the problem with skype that i can’t call anyone. i can see frinds online but can’t accept incoming call or call:( any one know anything?
hate going to windows for skype
If it will not make test sound …you need to try different options with your sound. For example if you are using USB headphones, go into Preferences/Sound and make sure USB headphones is selected in the sound options for each of the categories.
Unfortunately Skype is slow in updating the versions so you have to use an old one, which should work. Check your hardware settings for sound.
Check your sound settings as that is the common problem.
Well, I managed to get skype and I can get even a call but every time I sign in I have to go to TERMINAL and “kill” each time several SKYPE accounts that for some reason pop in whenever I sign in or dial a number. Nobody seems to know what to do with this annoyance.
I am using Ubuntu 9.04 also and when I downloaded the older version skype off the link…I opened the file and it said error Wrong Architecture. i386
How can I fix that?
If you have ubuntu 9.04 and 64 bit and you cannot install skype at all go to http://www.skype.com/go/getskype-linux-ubuntu-amd64
When you download that just open with Gdeb and press install package and you are all set
When I try it, it says:
blah blah blah
Unable to copy the user’s xauthorisation file
WTF please help me
To Install in Ubuntu 9.04 X64 do this:
1) Download the bin from http://www.skype.com/download/skype/linux/choose/ -> Ubuntu 7.04-8.04
2) Install it with dpkg -i –force-architecture skype-debian_2.0.0.72-1_i386.deb
2.1) Look that the skype-debian_2.0.0.72-1_i386.deb is the package that I downloaded from that url….
3) That’s it …
Ya so I have sound problems too. So far I have found out that the best solution to this problem is….THEY NEED TO MAKE A VERSION FOR UBUNTU 9.04. 🙂
I took the advice of Itso (20th entry) and it worked a treat on my AMD laptop well done and Thanks. I had been getting the i386 error message.
if you still have problem with skype voice then kill your skype application.
and type
sudo killall pulseaudio

skype can install but cant login on ubuntu 9.04 ? anybody help pls thank
I tried installing Skype after installing Ubuntu 9.04 on my Dell Mini 9 netbook. The microphone did not work. I looked at the other blogs and other people have the same problem. None of the solutions worked. I reformatted the hard drive and reinstalled Ubuntu 9.04 and skype three times trying different settings. I finally gave up and reinstalled the Dell factory Ubuntu DVD.
I had Problem with getting the mic to work in skype beta 2.1.0.47 and i just followed the instruction on this ubuntu help page (https://help.ubuntu.com/community/Skype) for skype and it worked.
I just did this step and skype found my usb mic from my logitech camara. I think the whole issue is the Pulseaudio driver is causing all the issue with it. Maybe you donot even have have Esound installed but i installed anyway after i did that it worked.. Made the test call and had no problems with it.
killall pulseaudio
sudo aptitude remove pulseaudio
sudo aptitude install esound
sudo aptitude remove /etc/X11/Xsession.d/70pulseaudio
I have installed Skype 2.1 for Ubuntu but I can’t connect (blank field) and my email adress is not registred at the Skype help center.

Pren,
If you are using ubuntu 9.04 take and read my post 28 and it will fix the mic problem.
Shane
Tharindu,
in you Synaptic Package Manager search for libqt4, if you select libqtcore4 or libqtgui4..it should select all the packages that need to be installed.. if not you need to install libat4-dbus
Shane

I had horrible problems. In the end I just downloaded the Debian package from the Skype downloads and it worked fine on my Ubuntu 9.04. Ubuntu having its roots in Debian and all that.
Thanks for the wonderful article.
FOr others who’ve been having problems configuring:
Please try to change your audio device in the sound settings. To check if your microphone has been configured properly, use the sound recording program to test the microphone. If that works, then skype would automatically work 🙂
Btw, please kill all the processes related to pulseaudio and this would work
I followed the step above and I have Ubuntu 9.1 and it doesn’t even let me click download.
This comes up:
Error: Dependency is not satisfiable: libqt4-dbus (>= 4.4.3)
Cannot seems to get it fixed, any help appreciated.
I am getting the same problem as # 6 I downloaded and installed skype but I cannot sign up for an account. I launch skype by going to APPLICATIONS -> INTERNET -> SKYPE and then click on “Don’t have a Skype name yet”. This opens up a “create a new skype account window” on which the “sign in” button is not highlighted. Can someone please tell me how to sign up for skype? Thanks!
