New Ubuntu 9.10 Karmic Koala Themes
One thing that I look forward to each time a new distro is released is the artwork, theme and overall graphical setup of each distro. As Ubuntu 9.10 Karmic Koala matures we are getting closer and closer to seeing the default desktop, theme, splash screen and other graphical enhancements. In April, many Ubuntu users were caught off guard when the Ubuntu 9.04 Jaunty Jackalope default background did not feature the animal it was nicknamed after as some of the earlier Ubuntu releases did. This only added more excitement and uncertainty to the Ubuntu beta and RC releases which often contain the graphical changes included in the final release. Although the default graphical appearance shouldn’t be a deal-breaker when choosing a Linux distribution, for many people it’s just that. Make sure you’re choosing a Linux distro based on its features and compatibility with your hardware. A theme is secondary.
If you’re an Ubuntu beginner be sure and check out these Ubuntu Training Videos.
I came across a firestorm of Twitter updates claiming new changes to the Ubuntu 9.10 theme selection were available. After a closer look I was excited to see several themes community themes are available. The “Community-themes” package includes 4 new themes Turrican, Hanso, Impression, and Kin. If that’s not enough 2 new icon sets are also included. Looks like Ubuntu 9.10 Karmic Koala is going to be all dressed up.
These themes are not set in stone but seem to be headed in the same direction as the Wave and Dust themes that were accepted for Ubuntu 9.04 Jaunty Jackalope. I am excited for user input, screenshots, and to see the final look of Ubuntu 9.10.
Here are my two favorites out of the new Ubuntu 9.10 Karmic Koala themes.

i hope they can help and create a new theme for karmic koala.
we should support them.
thank you.
The Bisigi Project has the best Gnome themes around and they have at least 2 specifically targeted at Ubuntu. Their website in English is

I really don’t understand why after all these years Ubuntu has yet to get a nice looking theme, the defaults they always choose look horrendous. Well here’s hoping……
link updated
Liked the first two. I totally agree when you say that although the default graphical appearance shouldn’t be a deal-breaker when choosing a Linux distribution, for many people it’s just that. The OS itself rulez but the default theme sucks. It lacks everything a modern OS has to have: beauty, transparency, cool fonts and cool icons.
From those themes i liked the first two with Hanso being the most beautiful. Bug again, they still need to improve the icons. They’re quite old-fashioned.
I think they are spending too much time worrying about what themes they can add. It is relatively easy to add a theme after you install. The default theme is a selling point whether or not it should be important. They should improve that and improve the core functionality of their OS before worrying too much about additional themes.
I personally think these new themes are a joke. They are so close to a real look with the Dust theme. When I look at these new themes what comes to mind is “Half Assed”. I swear creating a nice theme is like kryptonite to Canonical. Some may disagree but the look is very important. You don’t go to a job interview with a dirty t shirt on and say i’ll change it later do you?
Great point. In my opinion this is one reason Linux Mint is doing so well. Thank you for your insight.
Yeah, the Linux Mint theme and the Dust theme are the 2 best themes right now. As much as I like a good dark theme though Ubuntu needs a main stream light theme. It would be nice to see some ideas for a light Dust theme.
I really like that Hanso wood desktop backgroung. Any1 have a link to d/l that one?

I made this out of leopard bsm.
Ubuntu 9.10 is dreadful. There were so many problems that I simply stopped using it and moved to Fedora. 9.10 sucks.
I love ubuntu 9.10 and thank you for sharing the best themes with the community. Regards
I like the Impression theme. I never knew they were there. Thanks for the head’s up.
